Video and audio codec packs for Linux

Those who use Linux, it is very likely that many times, when you try to play some video, audio file, DVD … the player has not been able to play it, this is due to the fact that the operating systems in general are based on a program called codec Reproduce such files, but Linux because of its philosophy of free software does not include them by default, as these are private.

However, when we try to find and install them, it is almost impossible to find a package of codecs, which solves the problem, which is why I have decided to do a little research work, to find codecs that allow us to enjoy without any problems of our films and music.

Of the codecs that I will show you next, I advise that you install the first one of all, and with that, surely you will not have to eat your head, the other 2 should also work, but are a little more difficult to install.




Video and audio codec packs for Linux:

VLC: This is the best package of codecs of all, which also includes its own player, with this pack installed, you can reproduce everything you want.

To install it from the terminal you have to execute the following commands and in the following order:

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: vidolan / stable-daily
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install vlc
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get upgrade

Ubuntu-restricted-extras: A package of codecs, very important and that will allow us to reproduce multitude of formats.

To install it from the terminal, we must execute the following commands:

Sudo apt-get install ubuntu -restricted-extras (for Ubuntu).
Sudo apt-get install Kubuntu -restricted-extras (for Kubuntu).
Sudo apt-get install xubuntu -restricted-extras (for Xubuntu).
Sudo apt-get install curl (For playing DVD movies).

Curl ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/debian/videolan-apt.asc | Sudo apt-key add – echo “deb ftp://ftp.videolan.org/pub/debian/stable ./” | Sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/libdvdcss.list

Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
Sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get upgrade

W32codecs / w64codecs: These packages will also allow you to reproduce a large number of formats, and also has specific packages for systems based on 32 and 64 bits.

To install it through the terminal:

Sudo apt-get install –force-yes w32codecs (For 32-bit version)
Sudo apt-get install –force-yes w64codecs (For 64-bit version)

You should also install these 2 packages, to increase the number of formats to play, including playing DVD movies:

Sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
Sudo apt-get install curl

These 2 commands, you must always execute them, after installing all the packages that you want to install, these commands what they do is to download the updates of these programs:

Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get upgrade
